THE DAY AFTER THE DAY AFTER
By
Michael Edwin Q.

Standing by the stagnate river, the earth under my feet yields
And gives way from under my weight
Hoof marks left by thirsty horses
The talons of the eagle have left scratches
Like cuts carved into loose stones ready to plummet
Into the icy waters below
An eternal winter is coming, a cold yet snowless season
No water collects to reflect the sunlight
Clouds fight to the death for a place in the sky
All is dark and darker as the final episode plays out
Colors of rust and gray are all that’s left
The wind whirls dead leaves in ever widening circles
Trees split as the wood dries
The land is barren, infertile, every seed stillborn

The song no longer returns to the coda
Echoes of the last note have long since faded
Leaving a silence so sharp it pierces the mind
And destroys the memory of all things past
Flakes of ash fall gently and cover everything
To hide our shame and our pride
As we dwell in this Eden turned round
With no tombstone to mark our passing
